J. Stockard Pro Tyer Luke Stacy version of the Grey Fox, a Catskill classic originally developed by legendary angler and author Preston Jennings is beautiful. Designed to imitate a range of mayflies common to northeastern rivers, this dry fly remains a favorite for its clean silhouette and all-around effectiveness.
Luke primarily ties the pattern in size 14, occasionally sizing down to 16, though a slightly larger version would easily stand in for bigger mayfly species. The Grey Fox isn’t showy, but it’s reliable—floats well, fishes naturally, and works in a variety of hatch situations. If you’re fishing waters from the Delaware to the West Branch, you’ll want a few of these tucked into your fly box.
