More About Ewing Hackle

Ewing Feather Birds produces respected genetic hackle for fly tyers. Based in Waterville, Iowa, Doug Ewing has spent more than 30 years working on his birds, and that dedication shows in the quality and consistency of every feather the operation produces.

What sets Ewing hackle apart

  • Feathers for streamers, deceiver patterns, dry flies and everything in between.
  • A disciplined breeding approach that keeps the flock pure by raising only white and barred grizzly birds.
  • A wide variety of dyed colors, from bright attractor shades to subtle natural tones.
  • Quality hen and rooster feathers built for serious work at the vise.

That combination of careful genetics and skilled dyeing gives tyers a reliable, consistent base material pattern after pattern. To understand how genetic hackle quality affects your flies, see our explainer on dry fly hackle, cape versus saddle versus hen and our primer on the different feathers found on chickens.

What is genetic hackle?

Genetic hackle comes from birds selectively bred over generations for dense barbs, fine stems and consistent fiber length, producing feathers with more consistent tying characteristics than non-selective material.
