Like its nymphal counterpart represents a wide range of mayfly species from drakes to march browns. Because it floats well and it also works nicely in a dry dropper rig. Materials Hook: Standard dry-fly hook (here a TMC 100), size 12. Thread: Tan 8/0 or 70-denier. Tails: Deer hair, cleaned and stacked. Rib: Gold oval French tinsel, small. We were hosted by Captain Kurt's Charters and Kurt Bitikofer, along with his daughter Morgan, were our guides. Conditions were just about perfect and we caught many steelhead. One of the most effective patterns was a little gray nymph. Since that time I've been messing around with the pattern and this is what I've come up with. It was developed by upper-midwest guide, Dave Pinczkowski for bass, but it has proven effective on many species, both freshwater and saltwater. On the BHD we've caught largemouth and spotted bass, rainbow trout, white bass, hybrid striped bass, longer sunfish, pickerel, speckled sea trout, ladyfish, spotted gar, choupique, and probably several other species that I’m missing. This is a fun-to-tie topwater bluegill and panfish fly that also works very well for bass. We'll tie it in a size 8, which is a good crossover size to tempt bass along with the bluegills. I also tie it in size 10 (bluegills) and sizes 4 and 6 (bass). It uses inexpensive craft foam, so you can mix and match any color combo you like. Materials 2x long nymph hook #8 (#4 for bass to #12 for small panfish) Marabou tail in Sculpin Olive - (optionally add flash or rubber legs to tail) Roster cape hackle collar in Grizzly Olive (NOT saddle as I said in video!) 2mm craft foam - tan and green glued together Hare'E Ice Dubbing in brown for underbody - any matching dubbing works Medium round rubber legs in black or matching colors. The Circus Peanut was developed by Russ Maddin when he worked for Kelly Galloup at his fly shop in Traverse City, MI. It was one of the earlier articulated streamers and remains very popular to this day because it is so effective. The Circus Peanut is a perfect pattern to learn how to tie articulated streamers, as the body of the fly is fairly simple to tie. It is basically a Woolly Bugger on the back hook, and a Woolly Worm (Woolly Bugger without a tail) on the front hook. It also lends itself to personal variation in colors, flash, type of feathers, cone head instead of eyes, etc. This version is slightly different than Ross Maddin’s original, but I think this version is just a bit easier to tie.
