The Pheasant Tail is one of the most widely fished nymph patterns in the world. Its slim profile and natural coloration imitate a broad range of aquatic insects, making it effective in rivers, streams, and tailwaters year-round. The downside, as most anglers know, is durability.

This updated Pheasant Tail (developed and tied by Jeremy Knapp using materials from Celtic Blob Company) keeps the classic silhouette intact while reinforcing the fly with modern synthetics. By combining traditional pheasant tail fibers with micro synthetic curl and SMI dubbing, the result is a nymph that fishes like the original but lasts significantly longer.

Materials

  • Hook: Size 14 jig-style hook
  • Bead: 3.5 mm copper bead
  • Thread: Black UTC 70 denier
  • Tail & Wing Case: Natural pheasant tail fiber
  • Abdomen: Micro synthetic herl (Copper & Chocolate)
  • Thorax: SMI dubbing (Black & Green)
  • Legs (optional): Lively Legs, extra small, brown
  • Finish: UV resin (thicker gel preferred)
