Nylon is also generally more buoyant and less dense than fluorocarbon, which makes it a natural choice when you do not want the final connection pulling a small dry fly under.

For nymphs, wet flies and other subsurface presentations, Cortland Fluorocarbon Tippet offers greater density, good abrasion resistance and lower visibility underwater than typical nylon. It is not literally invisible, and it does not automatically make a rig sink, but it is a practical choice when the terminal section will spend the drift below the surface or around rock and structure.

A useful all-purpose trout range is 3X through 6X. Larger flies and stronger currents call for heavier tippet; smaller flies and technical water may call for finer material. When extending a tapered leader, avoid abrupt diameter jumps. Moving one or two X sizes at a time generally preserves turnover better than attaching very fine tippet directly to a much heavier leader section.

Cortland Tippet Rings are stainless steel rings with a nickel-black finish, available in several sizes. Tying one to the end of the tapered portion of a leader creates a fixed connection point for replacement tippet. That lets you change or rebuild the terminal section without steadily shortening the leader itself.

The smallest practical trout size adds very little bulk, but the ring should still be matched to the rig.
