A little apprehensive when I received my first shipment and started using this product as it does tend to stretch when applying too much pressure and you are subject to color fade.
However perseverance, experimenting and not applying too much pressure when winding on, tying many flies has now changed my view. Once applied and tied off I brush a little glue over it for extra binding and strength. There are 50 plus strips per packet which is great, allows you to tie upwards of 250 flies depending on the size you are tying! I find the smaller strips easier to work with as I tie a lot of small flies as it lies well on the hook giving it an excellent natural presentation. The natural stripped quills are still best but they are a lot more expensive and if lucky you may get to tie a couple of flies which each quill! This product gives you many opportunities to make really great flies at a minimal cost. Just remember not to apply too much pressure when winding on. Also in the future I would like to see Hareline introduce another color a little lighter than the Blue Winged Olive, a more yellow/olive would make it look more natural. The colors they offer now are excellent but one in between yellow and olive would be great advantage!
I will be purchasing more of this product in future orders.
Enjoy making those new patterns!
I'm new to fly tying, only about 1 month in or so. I only started fly fishing this year and i'm addicted. Once I started tying I wanted to tie the patterns I had success with during my time fishing. One of my favorites was the Mosquito pattern and so I went out of my way and bought these with only that in mind. They wrap very easily even for a beginner like myself and are an excellent alternative to Turkey biots or normal quill bodies. They have good color and a good "look" to them as quill bodies and they come in 2 sizes per package. They are all one long, uniform length, they seem very strong, and I tend to get 3-4 flies out of each strip. I'm very satisfied with them as quill bodies.
I don't recommend this product. It is poorly made.
While it ties up reasonably well on the vice and allows you to avoid the preparation of a natural quill, it doesn't hold up on the water.
I tied up several Klinkhammers with the olive synthetic quill material as the body. After 30 minutes of fishing, the olive color was wearing out. After 90 minutes and several fish, the olive color was gone and all that was left was an unnatural white plastic material.
I changed to an Adams Gray in the material, hoping my first bunch was just a bad batch. Same thing - color goes in no time and you are left with a very unappetizing, unfishable fly.
Hareline usually gets fly material right. Not this one though.
