For decades I tied off my flies with a hand whip finish and thought there was no need for a tool to do the same job as my fingers. As I started to tie smaller flies and use lighter threads, I discovered I wasn't exactly right. It took me about 30 seconds to figure out how to use the tool, and I was able to make more precise finishes on small flies. Very nice and a great value.
It's the right tool for the job

I bought a fly tying kit that came with a standard spring type whip finisher. My best advise lose it, invest in a Matarelli style whip finisher, you won't be sorry. It took less than a half an hour to master using the rotary whip finisher. It's just the right tool for the job, and with a brand like Dr. Slick, you know you have a quality tool to work with.
Slick...like its name.

I have always "finished" my flies with a "Thompson" style whip finisher. It worked well, but the "Matarelli" style whip finisher is soooo much easier to learn and use. I got the bamboo handled one and it is nice to hold and the rotating arm makes whip finishing fast and slick! The built in half-hitch tool on the bottom end of the handle is nice too! (One less tool on the bench.)Get one, you won't regret it.
