Mini Tippet Rings
by: Niche Products
SKU: LL-295020-0000

Product Overview:

These nickel alloy rings are very small, smooth and seamless connectors between your leader and tippet. Tie one on the end of your leader, then tie the tippet onto the ring These rings make changing or replacing tippet easy without nibbling away at the leader. They really have caught on among competitive fly fishers, because of the speed and ease with which tippet can be changed. May be used on any leader system and are excellent for tying droppers. Though light enough to fish dry flies and midges on 7X tippets, they will handle any load your leader and tippet will bear. Available in the original nickel silver and now in black nickel for use in deep water or low light levels; choose from nominal 2 mm for light to medium leader or 3 mm size for heavy leader and tippet. Made in England, available with 20 or 100 rings per package.

Other Details:
Actual measurements for the 2mm rings are 0.075″ (1.9mm) outside diameter and 0.05″ (1.3mm) inside diameter. For the 3mm rings, the outside diameter is 0.095″ (2.4mm) and the inside diameter is 0.0625″ (1.6mm).
Starting at: $5.95

5 out of 5 stars outstanding 09/30/2009
Reviewer: Joel Szymczyk (jszymczyk@sw.rr.com) from Rehobeth, AL US
For decades, I used a loop-to-loop tippet connection on my leaders. I'd use a double-surgeon's knot on the end of the leader, and again on my tippet. This worked well and I rarely had any issues. I had read about the mini-tippet rings, and was pleased when I got my first package. Now I have gone to using a Trilene or Improved Clinch (depending on the material) on each side of the ring. These work well and I have not had a single failure in using these inshore salt, warmwater in the south, or trout fishing in the northeast. I also discovered these are great for making small wire leaders using superflex wire. Instead of tying a knot to the ring, use GSP thread to whip a tiny loop holding one of these rings, and coat with epoxy. Easy and quick.

I have never tried the rings before so I thought I would give them a whirl. Very nice and very tiny.

4 out of 5 stars Handling These Rings 01/29/2009
Reviewer: Tom Myers (tomy1746@gmail.com) from Florida Panhandle
The 2mm are very difficult to handle. I found handling was easier by taking a 6" length of fine wire, actually I used #4 Malin, tightly folded it in half and threaded one side into the ring and slid it down to the tight fold. I could then clamp the two open wire ends into the fly vise and easily tie my leader to the ring without risk of dropping it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for cold hands 08/06/2008
Reviewer: B.J. from Potter County, PA
These things are a day saver when trying to change tippet with numb fingers while steelheading. They also make it really easy to attach a much lighter tippet than usual to a heavier leader and not have to worry about your knot slipping.

5 out of 5 stars Time and convenience: Tippet Rings 00/00/0000
Reviewer: Sorin Comsa (sorincomsa@yahoo.ca) from Aurora, Ontario CA
As far as I know these rings were "borrowed" from the coarse fishing competitions in Europe. I first saw them in a book written by two Czech champions and in 2004 I had the chance to buy and try them at the World Fly Fishing Championships in Slovakia. I haven't fished without them ever since. The idea is that you can use a ring to join very fast two pieces of leader and/or the leader and the tippet, even if there is a big difference in diameter (i.e. 0X and 6X). Usually the tippet is a 6X and that needs to be replaced quite often. An improved clinch knot and away you go. Time is really expensive in a competition. For non-competitors it provides (a lot of) convenience. Try it once and you'll never go without it. Then drop me an email to say thanks, or swear, or anything, at sorincomsa@yahoo.ca PS - One advice: as soon as you get the rings split them in sets of 5 and place them on safety pins. When you want to tie on a ring, pass the line through the ring, tie the clinch knot, clip the end of the line, and only AFTER that take the ring out from the safety pin. Then you can tie the ring to the second piece of line. Tight Lines!
