I used to use the old standbye 34007 and the longer shank Mustad 34011. I tried out S71SS and S74SS and find the newer S71 and S74 to be a lot sharper and stronger. I have been converted to the belief that the hook is the most critical component of the fly! I find that I am catching and landing more fish and not making as many excuses. I am now a firm believer in a quality hook. I guess the old adage comes into play, you get what you pay for. I recommend you try a premium hook if you are using the old mustad standbye 34007 and 34011. Tight lines.
One of the staples of my bench..they're extremely sharp, and have a beautiful finish. I don't tie large flies on anything less. These hooks outlast ALL of my salt/predator flies. I just tie new flies on my used hooks. Durability second to none!
Being new to saltwater tying I was not sure what Hooks to get. I settled on the Mustad Signature S71SZ-34007 Because I have a long history of tying trout flies with Mustad products. I found the hooks to have a beautiful finish. A few hooks in each pack have had a slight burr on the point. The burr was easy to remove with a fine diamond hone and all the hooks now have an exceptionaly sharp point. I will buy these hooks again.
I use these now to tie up all my flesh flies and use them in all of my tandem salt applications. These are very sharp and do not dull as quickly as the older versions did, they are solid hooks that are sure to give solid hook-ups.
