What a pleasure... 5 out of 5 stars

After tying on a Peak Vise for quite a few years I was looking for a vise w/ less bulk and a cleaner hand position behind the hook. The offset nature of the Peaks and Renzettis are nice but I feel like all of the hardware to get into this position gets in the way.

Queue my purchase of the HMH. At first I was very hesitant about this purchase but once I took it out of the box and tied a simple midge pattern I was hooked. Outstanding vise and outstanding quality. I am looking at this vise to be the last one I purchase and also give to my son - I am only in my late 30's too... that nice of a quality vise.

Also, JS Stockard as usual has great customer support and I literally got this vise in 2 days... Although I have a very nice fly shop within one mile of my house JS always proves worth the patronage...

HMH is sweet!

I have been fishing/tying for 40 years and always used a smaller beginners type vise, never was an issue until I saw an HMH Spartan at a friends house. I used it once and I ordered one the next day. The biggest differance is the detail and how much easier it is to tie. You don't know what you are missing till you use a finely crafted tool like this, well made, stainless steel, smooth rotation and probably the strongest jaws ever. you get what you pay for!

Shopping For A New Vise? 5 out of 5 stars

Reviewer: from Mena, AR US

Before purchasing a new vise, I did a lot of research and decided on the HMH Spartan. The moment I opened the box, I knew I'd made the right decision. The quality of HMH vises are unbeatable. Constructed of precision machined stainless and tool steels with machined brass fittings, this fine instrument will last forever. Still, it is good to know they have an
"unconditional" lifetime warranty. I love the super smooth 360º rotary action and the ability to easily change to any of the 3 available jaws (Omni, Micro, Mag) in a matter of seconds. If you are looking for a simple, reliable, professional-quality vise with unsurpassed customer service, look no farther.

The one thing in life you can take for granted. 5 out of 5 stars

This is the one thing when I am fly tying that I never have to give a thought about. Smooth as a stream in the summer. It just is.

Generally good but has one major flaw... 4 out of 5 stars

I did a lot of research before buying this vise since I was sick of fighting with the lower-end vise I'd been using for years. This vise is clearly high-quality and holds the hook firmly without slipping, I also like the very easy to use rotating feature to be able to see around the fly. The pedestal is very solid and heavy enough that the base never moves. The one aspect of this vise that I really don't like is the angle adjustment. I don't think this is something people change very often (I know I never do) and it's a good thing because it's incredibly difficult to get this one tight enough to stay in place, and it doesn't stay there for long. This means that whenever I have to put pressure on the side of the vise to close the jaws tightly I also have to fight the angle adjustment to keep it from moving up and down. Periodically I get out the Allen wrench and crank down on the angle adjustment socket to try and lock it back in place but I have to put so much pressure on it that I'm afraid I'll strip the socket. This is too bad because 1) it's the only real problem with the vise and it's annoying and 2) I could have saved $50 and gotten the simpler SX model without the angle adjustment and been much happier. My advice is to buy the SX unless changing the angle of your jaws is important to you.
