With long supple quills, incredible barb density and a full range of hackle sizes down to the 20's, Whiting Dry Fly Capes are the industry standard for quality and value. This product line derives its heritage from the legendary Hoffman grizzly super hackle stock. Bronze grade is not only the "sweet spot" in terms of value but also is, in Tom Whiting's words, "adequate for 90% of most tiers' needs." The average feather in a bronze cape ties 1 fly and hackle sizes span 5 to 6 hook sizes (i.e., sizes 10 through 18). Brown may be dyed if the natural is unavailable; other colors are natural unless specified as dyed. The new barred dark ginger color is an excellent substitute for hard-to-find cree.

Best available and best value

There is not much to say, this is simply the finest hackle in the world, and the bronze grade is all you need. The hackle density is amazing and the stems are very supple. The "sweet spot" on the feather, where the web disappears, is close to the feather base, so the resultant hackle can produce many wraps. On a size 14 dry fly, you can easily make 8 full wraps of hackle. The dyed dun color is perfectly uniform and matches the mayfly dun color you see on BWOs or Hendricksons. No one in the world has ever applied so much science to poultry genetics, and the efforts of Dr. Whiting are well-appreciated by fly-tiers everywhere.

Great Entry Level Cape

Reviewer: A viewer from Missoula, MT US

Whether you're on a budget or just getting into tying, Whiting bronze 1/2 capes are a good choice. The biggest challenge with buying hackle online is you don't get to inspect it first. With Whiting hackle, you know you're going to get good quality and a proper selection of colors. These 1/2 capes provide a decent selection of sizes and will tie a lot of flies without breaking the bank. Experienced tiers may appreciate the higher grade hackles, but for me, the bronze level is good enough and the fish can't tell the difference. My only complaints are that they tend to shift in their packaging, perhaps due to shipping, which can slightly damage a few tips. Also, the packaging they come in is not good for long term storage since the cape is difficult to remove repeatedly due to the rather hefty bag zipper.

Great Product good price

With the demand for grizzly hackle the last couple of years, I was glad to see that JS Stockard has kept there flytying customers informed and fair. Great cape will keep me supplied for a while. Full length feathers and shorter ones for midges and small dries.

This is a great product at a great price. You get a really large amount of good feathers with a really good range of sizes with these capes. I am not dissapointed at all. These capes have met my needs for all the dry fly hackle I tie and will last a long time.
