I bought this tool kit not wanting a cheap overall kit. It was well worth the money, and the vise is actually very good. The jaws are a little large for some midge hooks, but are great for all-around applications. The only thing I would suggest however is to get the matarelli style whip finisher, as this one comes with a thompson style wchich may give beginners trouble. Overall very good kit.
I bought two of these kits for my grandchildren, and had a lot of fun introducing them to fly tying. They thought the equipment was fine, and it was a good deal. However, an experienced tyer will find the vice adjustment to be coarse and a little challenging to set the proper pressure in hook holding. The included whip finisher is a piece of junk - just toss it! This is a good deal for the price, but not something one would be happy with for a longer term.
What a deal -- it's like getting the tools for free!!! Have tied about a dozen flies now, getting better (and faster) with each one. Any mistakes made are my fault, not the vise or tools. Good basic tool set -- all you need to get started. As a previous reviewer suggested, check all the screw-on parts on the vise every session. Takes a little practice to dial in the right tension on the vise to hold the hooks securely, but not too tight. Shipping costs very reasonable, items shipped out promptly and arrived quickly. I am a happy (and will be a return) customer
I have been searching for a fly tying kit at a lot of web sites when I came upon this one. I was very, very pleased with my choice. The vise holds any size hook very well and rotates 360'. The kit comes with 2 bobbins unlike other kits offering only one. The scissors, although the economy type, were well made and very sharp. This kit has everything and all items are well made. At this price it is an outstanding choice. 5 out of 5 on this kit. Thanks JS.
I've only had this for a week or so, but I can already attest to the value of this kit. This includes all the tools you need to get started and then some. All are solidly constructed and it appears that they will last for years. If you're starting out on a budget this is the way to go.
