Great Vise

Reviewer: A viewer from Bella Vista, AR US

I have head this vise for a few months now. Great vise. I used a Spartan for about 10 years and switched to the Standard. I like the larger knobs on this one. I don't think I'll ever need another vise!

Very nice vise

Reviewer: A viewer from Acton, IN US

I had a lower end Renzetti vise for years before I decided to upgrade to something of higher quality. This vise is beautiful. I really like the interchangeable jaws as I tie a lot of small flies. With the Renzetti I always had trouble with those small 20 and 22 hooks. The C-Clamp works very well on my vise and clamps securely to the table. I suspect that the pedestal base works well too; however, I have not tried that. I was initially concerned about the rotary action of the vise not being horizontal like my Renzetti; however, this seems to make no difference.

Love HMH Vises

Reviewer: A viewer from Bella Vista, AR US

I tied on a HMH Spartan for 10 years. This last fall I decided to "upgrade" to the HMH Standard. I considered several other high end vises but in the end, I can do everything that I need to with this one. The components are high quality, and it works like it should. HMH also has great customer service, With my Spartan, I lost the allen wrench that came with it. An easy phone call later and a new one arrived at no charge! I expect to be tying on the Standard for at least the next 10 years if not the rest of my life.

Best on the market!

Reviewer: A viewer from Greendale, WI US

I tie about 100 dozen flies a year, and I have had this vise for 10 years and it looks and performs just like it did the day I bought it. The cream of the crop for a quality vise under $300.

Grips a Hook Like No Other Vise

Reviewer: A viewer from FREDERICKSBRG, VA USA

I intended to review this vise after I had tied awhile on it. However, there are some features I wanted to share that I found worthy of a review now. I finally ordered the HMH Standard from J. Stocking during the recent sale after years and years of deliberation whether I really wanted it. Some 30 years ago, my mentor used exclusively an HMH and tied commercially. But I was more captivated by the rotary vises then. Later, I accumulated a number of different vises and I was satisfied with their performance. My travel vise has been the lightweight, original Renzetti Traveler, which I later upgraded the head with a cam operation. My bench vise has been either a Dyna-King Barracuda Junior, a Peak, or a Regal. What has always interested me in the HMH vise was the micro jaw, which ties down to #32 hooks. So, when I found myself tying flies in the #22 - #24 range, I ordered the HMH Standard and a micro jaw. Although it is a rotary, it's not an in-line rotary. But that really doesn't matter for many of the flies I tie. The rotary is smooth and allows a full inspection of the fly. What struck me as I began to use this vise was the overall quality. It's a simple design, but heavy in stock and precise in its engineering and workmanship. Moreover, adjustments are quite easy to manage. The written instructions are clear and easy to follow. HMH even has a helpful video on its website. Once an adjustment is made, it stays in place with no slippage, which should be a prime consideration for selecting a vise. The HMH grips a hook like grim death. Yes, the HMH is a keeper. And I have yet to use the micro jaw, which attracted me to this vise in the first place.
