Swiss straw is a good synthetic substitute for raffia. I order some in brown to use for shellbacks on a sowbug pattern, and it looks fantastic and is easy to work with. I intend on incorporating it into other patterns. If you want super realistic looking wingcases and scud backs, I recommend this product.

This stuff when spread open, and applied is transparent! awesome! I use it all the time for wing cases and shell backs. I like to put some pearl Mylar under it and it gives an effect flash to the fly with out over flashing it.
