3 out of 5 stars Real Pretty Foam... 00/00/0000
Reviewer: Robert Lundy (bob@lundy.ca) from Mississauga, Ontario CA
The first set of flies I tied was a batch of Crease Flies using the "Black" Hareline foam. The shiny laminate is simply incredible. I finished the flies by adding a dark back and lateral lines with "permanent" markers, then gluing on some 3D eyes. I have also used this foam in other colours for Gurglers, foam sliders and several other patterns. As a fishing item, this foam is quite good. As a tying material, this foam could use some improvements. The biggest area for improvement would be to reduce its density - make it lighter. There are plenty of other foams available to these manufacturers that would work just as well, and make for much lighter flies. Lighter foam is also quite a bit easier to work with. I noticed this especially when building Crease Flies. The sticky adhesive is totally inadequate to resist the tendency of the foam to "flatten out". Well, I suppose I expect this when working with Crease Flies so I already had some clothespins and some Zap-A-Gap CA at the ready. However, once built, these flies are lovely, and very durable (some lighter foams are also much less durable than the tough stuff used by Hareline - a compromise, I suppose). And as mentioned, it makes great topping for Gurglers, and similar flies.
