	Traditional Salmon and Steelhead Patterns 10/08/2009

Calf hair is an important element to creating some traditional steelhead and salmon patterns. Hareline calftails were a bit small but well suited for the low water patterns I tie. Overall I would give the product a mid grade. Fine for small to medium patterns.

I ordered four in various colors, and the quality was inconsistent. The quality of hair is good, fine textured and wavy- just what you'd expect. The hair length ranged from quite long to very short compared to past calf tails I have had. One of the four tails had an obnoxious odor. I mean REALLY bad when I opened the bag. We're used to bucktails and calftails having some odor, but this one smelled as if it hadn't been cleaned or processed at all. Took it outside and washed it in antibacterial soap and dried it thoroughly, we'll see if it's fit to bring back into the house. Would be nice if we could get calf tails without the bone in... but I've never seen them. JSFF replies: Sorry about the odiferous tail. We don't open bqgs before shipping natural materials, so poorly tanned pieces can slip past us. But feel free to let us know about the problem and we'll ship a replacement, no questions asked.

I use this on my wulff wings. Makes nice even wings.Stacks very easily without much force at all.I bought a spirit river calf tail at a local shop for a little more money ,but this one 2x the hair.I have always been pleased with harelines products.highly recomended!!

Great hair for smaller Clouser's as it gives the appearance of bulk but doesn't cast like a wet mop like marabou or fox can.

I am pleased with the quality of hareline calf tail. It suits my needs for patterns requiring hair wings, i.e. Wulff and steelhead. I also like this material for parachute posts.
