Roger has been fly fishing for about ten years. Now his main passion, he started out on the San Juan quality waters in Northwestern New Mexico. One summer while he and his son were fishing the San Juan, they met a part–time guide who was landing lots of trout. The guide let them in on his winning fly pattern — the rusty bead–head midge. Roger fished some of these flies and they worked well. He then started tying his own. Later, he expanded to tying the black/silver bead–head zebra and the black/blue bead–head. He did quite well with the rusty bead–head and his most lethal combination is the cream/rust pupae and rusty bead–head. One evening, while fishing in the upper flats, he began hauling in 18, 19, and 20 inch Rainbows. He ran out of the rusty bead–heads and put on the black bead–head zebra and continued hauling in the big ones. He decided to change to the black/blue bead–head. When he was finished, he had hauled in 11 large trout and lost as many, all in a two hour span!
