Great Product 07/13/2010

These tippet rings are the best. I have used them for years on all of my furled leaders and I would not change brands for anything. Strong yet they float with a dry fly.

A must for Furled leaders 07/08/2010

If you make your own furled leaders this is a must. I use the 2mm for 4wt and below F/leaders and the 3mm for the larger F/leaders. If you drop one of those 2mm forget about finding them. I pay my kids a $1 for everyone they find in the carpet before Mom vacums them up.

Great for Leader Repair and Building 07/03/2010

These rings are Great! They allow you to build Czech Nymphing rigs, extend the use of your long leaders by adding several feet of missing leader ends when you become tangled, etc. They make splicing tippet materials together easy. Much better than using a blood knot! I keep mine on a safety pin for easy handling. Two improved clinch knots and you have a new long, strong leader that lasts for many casts. They are a must have item for every fly angler!

I have been making my own braided leaders for the past year and have found these tippet rings to be the perfect compliment to the braided leaders. I just slip one of these rings on before I twist the leader and after all is said and done...I have a strong and clean connection point to tie on my tippet material. I mostly fish sub-surface flies, but when I go to dries, I am confident that the ring will not drag my fly under. Good stuff!

Time and convenience: Tippet Rings 00/00/0000

As far as I know these rings were "borrowed" from the coarse fishing competitions in Europe. I first saw them in a book written by two Czech champions and in 2004 I had the chance to buy and try them at the World Fly Fishing Championships in Slovakia. I haven't fished without them ever since. The idea is that you can use a ring to join very fast two pieces of leader and/or the leader and the tippet, even if there is a big difference in diameter (i.e. 0X and 6X). Usually the tippet is a 6X and that needs to be replaced quite often. An improved clinch knot and away you go. Time is really expensive in a competition. For non-competitors it provides (a lot of) convenience. Try it once and you'll never go without it. Then drop me an email to say thanks, or swear, or anything, at sorincomsa@yahoo.ca
PS - One advice: as soon as you get the rings split them in sets of 5 and place them on safety pins. When you want to tie on a ring, pass the line through the ring, tie the clinch knot, clip the end of the line, and only AFTER that take the ring out from the safety pin. Then you can tie the ring to the second piece of line.
Tight Lines!

I bought these tippet rings and after a bit of reluctance tied one on to a tippet that went to a single dry fly. I was expecting it to pull the dry fly under but it didn't. I was impressed and more inclined to change my tippet when I needed to (4x that day).

Droppers are easy 00/00/0000

I use a lot of two and three fly rigs and these tippet rings make doing this much easier. I'll put one of these at the end of my leader and tie a 6 inch and a 12-20 inch piece of tippet to the ring. The 6 inch piece is used for the top dropper and the 12-20 inch piece is used for the point fly. The ring makes it easy to replace whole sections without having to replace the whole rig.

I bought these to see if they would hold up to heavier fish... Steelhead..... Well i just got them in and tested to see how strong they are.... if they could take the load... tied 10lb tippet to it on both sides.... no problem.. broke the tippet.. 12lb broke the tippet again.. no signs of bending... was going to do 15lb but i am out..lol... but from the looks, these things would go all the way to 20lb... Only thing i wish is that they were 3mm ring... 2mm is hard to work with when your using heavier lines.... But over all glad i bought them...

These things are a day saver when trying to change tippet with numb fingers while steelheading. They also make it really easy to attach a much lighter tippet than usual to a heavier leader and not have to worry about your knot slipping.

Handling These Rings 00/00/0000
|
|
Reviewer: Tom Myers (tomy1746@gmail.com) from Florida Panhandle

The 2mm are very difficult to handle. I found handling was easier by taking a 6" length of fine wire, actually I used #4 Malin, tightly folded it in half and threaded one side into the ring and slid it down to the tight fold. I could then clamp the two open wire ends into the fly vise and easily tie my leader to the ring without risk of dropping it.

I wasn't sure about these rings at first. I was afraid that the weight of them would cause my tippet to sink, but I was wrong. they work great & they really help.

For decades, I used a loop-to-loop tippet connection on my leaders. I'd use a double-surgeon's knot on the end of the leader, and again on my tippet. This worked well and I rarely had any issues. I had read about the mini-tippet rings, and was pleased when I got my first package. Now I have gone to using a Trilene or Improved Clinch (depending on the material) on each side of the ring. These work well and I have not had a single failure in using these inshore salt, warmwater in the south, or trout fishing in the northeast. I also discovered these are great for making small wire leaders using superflex wire. Instead of tying a knot to the ring, use GSP thread to whip a tiny loop holding one of these rings, and coat with epoxy. Easy and quick.

Bought mini silver rings and tried it with all the leaders from 3x to 6x. It works well. Never drag down a dry fly. The only problem I have is that after putting on this ring, I can't slide up a float indicator for nymph anymore. May need to switch to other indicators.

New version of old idea 00/00/0000

We've been using silver, oval-shaped welded single links from jewelers this way since the early 90's. They are hard to find now so it's a nice these are available. The 2 downsides to these are:
1-That they are not oval. Oval is easier to use.
2-They rust, which silver did not.
I assume they are a small washer for watches or something intricate and probably test stronger than the 8 lb rating on the silver links.
